Dating apps, the most popular way to meet Japanese boyfriends: survey – Kyodo News

Dating apps have become the most common way for Japanese couples who got married this year to meet for the first time, with about one in five or 22.6 percent of new couples married couples who find love online, according to a recent survey conducted by an insurance company.

Online encounters surpassed couples who met at work or school, both accounting for 20.8 percent, and those met through introductions from friends and acquaintances at 9.4 percent.

The results of the survey, released Wednesday by Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Co., suggest greater adoption of Internet dating as opportunities to meet face-to-face fell in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

In previous editions of the survey in 2012, 2015 and 2016, 0% of responding couples reported meeting through dating apps. Since then, the increase in recent years has been rapid, with 12.2 percent of brides and grooms in 2019 citing the pivotal role of software in their unions, a proportion that rose to 16.9 percent in 2021 .

The online survey was conducted in October by the leading life insurance company for November 22, also known as Good Couple Day because the numbers 11 and 22 can be pronounced “ii fufu”, or good partner, in Japanese. In total, 1,620 married men and women between the ages of 20 and 79 provided valid responses to the latest survey.
