Jana Hocking on Power PDA, the new dating trend no one asked for | The Cairns Post

There is a new one dating trend and as someone who gets angry, i’m not a fan.

It’s called “Power PDA,” and it’s basically described as “hands-on” with your lover — lots of kissing and touching in public that makes onlookers super uncomfortable.

I experienced it the other day on a plane from Melbourne to Sydney. The couple in front of me was making out completely, with tongues and light moans completely oblivious to those around them. Especially me, who could see them in the empty seats while trying to watch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Very distracted

Now don’t get me wrong, after a few G’s and T’s, I may have also been involved in some ridiculous shenanigans at the back of a pub once, but on a plane, in the middle of the day?! Outrageous!

We see it more and more after the confinement. to think Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Scott speaking in front of her children on Keeping up with the Kardashians, Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox walking the red carpet, and if you’ve come across Megan Thee Stallion’s latest Instagram post, you’ll see her ass in her boyfriend’s face while he tries to play Mario Kart.

Now don’t get me wrong, if my ass was anything like hers, I’d probably put it on the gram too…but the old dork inside still says ‘eww, you use that thing to go toot! Not as a dinner plate’.

I am not a heartless and unloving person. I just prefer to keep things sensible in the bedroom. Or very briefly in public. For example, a few weeks ago I was on a road trip with a guy who makes my heart skip a beat and we stopped at a gas station for snacks. He walked past me in the lollipop aisle and gave me a light butt. No one was there to make me feel uncomfortable, but I was definitely encouraged. This is how you do it Power PDA.

I always question those who have to demonstrate in public that they are too affectionate. Yes, the pessimist in me wonders why they bother.

Take Meghan and Harry for example. We see her clinging to him in public like she’ll lose him if they don’t hold hands. Then take a good look at William and Kate. They are tall, strong and independent, but united. To me, this is a sign of a strong marriage. Two people who can stand on their own, but give each other an adorable side-eye when needed. No Power-PDA was needed to prove their union.

Is this feeling of sensitivity a sign of insecurity? May be. Lust? May be. Discomfort with those around them? Definitely.

Unlike our former teenagers who were excited and given little opportunities (especially at the cinema or school gates) to ravage each other, now we are grown ups who have our own houses and locked bedrooms to enjoy ‘those tender moments. And let’s be honest, when you’re in the early stages of romance, is there anything better than being nice and polite at the hotel front desk, before taking the elevator to your room to strip? No.

Although, according to Bumble’s latest statistics, more than 68% of its users say they are more open to public displays of affection after the pandemic. And yes, I get it, usually when we’re told we can’t do something, we just want to do it more. So it makes sense that all my fellow singles have come out of lockdown as hormonal teenagers, but can we draw a line at seeing each other’s tongues touching at the cinema line?

I’m telling you, Power PDA is a dating fad and I’ll happily bid you a fond farewell.
