Match CEO discusses mobile gaming after $50,000 investment in Clash of Clans – Protos

Match Group CEO Bernard Kim says dating apps are a much more valuable way to pass the time than mobile games, but only after he spent $50,000 in just three months on the strategy game for mobile Clash of Clans.

The former Zynga president made the remarks at New Street Research’s online dating summit while discussing the relative merits of mobile games versus apps like Tinder.

“I personally spent $50,000 in three months on Clash of Clans, and I still look back on it with a lot of shame,” Kim told the interviewer on stage.

I’m like “Oh my god, what did I really get out of this experience?“Nothing, apart from a really amazing wall, that isn’t cool today.”

Kim then claimed that instead, meeting your wife on a dating app is “an immeasurable reward that will last a lifetime and lead to incredible happiness.”

As president of Zynga, Kim was previously heavily involved in the developer to move in blockchain and NFT games. Despite this, he now appears to be turning his back on the idea of buying big money into the gamerather than focusing on the healthier rewards of finding love online.

This is likely a wise move. Match Group, which owns dating apps such as Tinder, Match.com and Hinge, and counts Hollywood blockbuster Ryan Reynolds among its investors, has seen its share price plummet in recent months. It has fallen 16% in 2023 and almost 60% in the last 12 months.

As such, dropping close to $17,000 a month on a game about wizards and goblins isn’t great.
