After nearly two decades together, Robin Roberts and Amber Laign are excited to take their relationship to the next level: On January 2, 2023, the Good Morning America host announced that she and her longtime partner were to organize a wedding at the end of this year. Now, Roberts has some new updates to share with her fans. On March 14, 2023, the station gave Entertainment tonight an update on the couple’s wedding plans. While Roberts didn’t reveal many of the details of their big day, she did share that the two have already set a date for their ceremony. “I’m proud to talk about it [it],” she says. “I’ll be a married woman. Our families are very excited [and] save the dates [are] it will be out soon.”
The TV reporter first revealed her upcoming wedding plans earlier this year by posting a clip of a conversation she had with a motivational speaker and author. Gabby Bernstein. “I’m hesitant because I haven’t said it out loud yet … I’m saying ‘yes’ to marriage,” Roberts tells Bernstein in the video. “We’re getting married this year. We had talked about something, but we’d put it off. She got sick, but she’s saying ‘yes’ to that and the next chapter.”
Roberts explained more about her decision to take the next step during her interview with Entertainment Tonight. “[Amber] he is my person after 18 years, and that’s why when Gabby Bernstein asked me at the beginning of the year, I raised my hand”, he remembers. “I said, ‘No, I’m meditating on marriage.’ I’m not just looking to have a wedding day. I’m looking at the union. It’s really exciting to know that I’ve been with this person for 18 years, and we’re still excited and we still want to be with each other, and we still want to start this new chapter together.”
The decision to marry her person comes after Laign’s battle with breast cancer. The reporter first shared that her partner had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 and battled complications from chemotherapy in April 2022. Three months later, Laign ended her treatment of radiation, which was cause for celebration. “Sweet Amber completing radiation, a very important phase of her treatment!” Roberts documented Instagram. “We both thank you for all your well wishes and prayers. Proud of her and all fellow Thrivers for your bravery and grace during a difficult time. This is indeed my #motivation for Mondays 🙏🏾 ”.
Roberts reflected on that rocky period in their relationship with Entertainment Tonight and shared that the current state of her partner’s health is looking up. “It was a tough year,” admits Roberts. “Her journey with breast cancer took some unexpected twists and turns, but she’s doing very, very well. The doctors said that when it comes to treatment, it’s like women and shoes. They don’t always fit and so they had to find the right one for their treatment.” Part of the reason the couple are vowing to say ‘I do’ this year is due to Laign’s ‘excellent’ health and because the cancer survivor is also ‘ready to start a new chapter’.
