HOUSTON (AP) – Authorities continued to investigate Sunday what led a man to shoot himself just before officers broke into his home and discovered he had been living with a dead body for months.
Neighbors contacted the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Saturday evening with concerns that none of the men who lived in the home had been seen in months, said Deputy Thomas Gilliland, a spokesman for the agency
At the west Houston home, deputies “noticed a lot of flies and a foul odor coming from one end of the house,” Gilliland said.
After entering the home, officers heard a gunshot and found the body of a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Gilliland said.
“In another adjoining room, they found the body of a male that was also severely decomposed,” Gilliland said, citing a time frame of at least several months.
He said an autopsy was scheduled on the decomposed body.
Investigators believe the two men lived together, but said they were trying to determine other details about their relationship.
Both men were believed to be in their 60s. Their names have not been released by authorities.
